Innocent Smoothies looking for Knitters

The Big Knit is nearly over, but there's still a few more hats to be made. A few Irish celebrities were asked to design hats for the Big Knit, and these will then be auctioned off for charity. If you would be interested in knitting one of these Celebrity Smoothie hats, please email them ASAP, to be assigned your celebrity design. You can email them at bigknitireland@innocentdrinks.ie.

If you want more info on the the celebrity hats, check out here, this is what they did in the UK last year.

New Maps

We recently came across a great map which has been created by Liz Plummer. Liz is a Textile Artist that lives in Wales, and she has created a map of Textile Museums from around the world. What a great resource, you can find the map here or in our Textile Map section. She also had a link up to a map of Textile Museums in France created by the Association of French Patchwork, so we have added that to our map listings as well.

Liz has kindly put a link to the Woolly Way Map, which is still a bit under-dressed, so please help us fill in the gaps! We, however, will not link up to any shop, museum, or person without their knowledge, so if there is something in your area, you can either email us the details and we will contact them, or why not be our ambassador and ask on out behalf. It means the map building is slow, but we like to think we are being polite...

Thank You

A big thanks to everyone who has contributed and read The Woolly Way so far. The next week or so will be quiet here, as we are preparing for the Knitting and Stitching Show, at the RDS in Dublin, next week, (more info on that here). As it is THE textile show in Ireland, we plan on targeting all the Irish stands present, and letting them know we are at their service. So, hopefully after the Show you will see a huge amount of new info being posted. As well as new listings for shops and workshops, we are also putting together two new sections, Heritage and Organic. These will consist of articles, interviews, and links to whats happening around the country in these areas. If you work in these areas, or simply have an interest, why not get involved. Chat in the forum, or simply email us woollyway[AT]gmail[DOT]com

Latest Reader Stats

The Woolly Way has been up and running for nearly its 1st month. Thanks to everyone who has gotten in touch with us, feeding us info on textile happenings from around the country, and also to our Readers! When starting the blog, we were trying to think of our readers, how many and what sort we would have. We wanted to put a visible statistics counter up on the blog, but were a little bit afraid. How could we promote the blog as a Textile Community when we could have a low counter reading ....2 readers.... So, we went with sitemeter, as its quite a discreet counter. But to our surprise, over the past month, we have had a great response and actually have some International readers!

Here are our readers stats to date:

Ireland 65% USA 12% UK 12% Holland 3%
Australia
2% Singapore 1% Germany 1% Unknown 4%

What a nice surprise! So, we are no longer a bit scared to publicly show our readers statistics, we are going to display them proudly! We have now added the stat counter ClustrMaps, it means our counter starts at the zero again, but it will be nice to see whos reading our little blog...

Recycled Gas Station

Check out this website, for an interesting take on reclaiming...

The goal of the International Fiber Collaborative is to provide an opportunity for people who enjoy working with fiber arts, whether professional artists, hobbyists or students, to come together from all over the world to express their concern about the worlds extreme dependency on oil.

This year's project is called the World Reclamation Art Project (W.R.A.P.). Participants have crocheted, knitted, stitched, patched, or collaged 3 foot square fiber panels that expresses each participants concern about this topic. Simply by designing and creating these panels and participating in this project they are, in the larger picture, expressing their concern about this important subject to the rest of the world. All the panels have been sewn together to completely cover an abandoned gas station in central New York State.

Spontaneous Knotting of an Agitated String

The IG Nobel Prize honours achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think. The prizes are intended to celebrate the unusual, honour the imaginative -- and spur people's interest in science, medicine, and technology. This years PHYSICS PRIZE went to Dorian Raymer of the Ocean Observatories Initiative at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, USA, and Douglas Smith of the University of California, San Diego, USA, for proving mathematically that heaps of string or hair or almost anything else will inevitably tangle themselves up in knots.

Spontaneous knotting of an agitated string
It is well known that a jostled string tends to become knotted; yet the factors governing the “spontaneous” formation of various knots are unclear. We performed experiments in which a string was tumbled inside a box and found that complex knots often form within seconds. We used

Another article on something similar is The Tangled Web of Self-Tying Knots

Mathematician Leopold Kronecker stated “God created the integers, all else is the work of man,” alluding to the fact that the natural numbers most likely arose from physical counting, as in one's fingers or goats in the pasture. Topology, however, is arguably a different creature altogether and may have had its own independent origins from the physical world in the ubiquitous knot—something that cannot be undone without using the free ends because the individual strands cannot move through each other

MEHMET GIRGIC a Turkish master feltmaker, will be joining us for several workshops between 15th and 27th January 2009. Each 3 day workshop will cost E240 plus materials, approx. cost of all materials necessary is E70 - E100, this depends on each actual rug made. Tea, coffee and an excellent simple lunch will be provided each day. Participants will have an amazing experience to work with a very generous tutor and learn the Osman technique of felting a rug. Mehmet is an inspiring tutor and unstinting in his knowledge and at the end of the 3 days everyone will have a beautiful rug of their own to take home with them. Because of the technique used it is not necessary to be an experienced feltmaker to participate in this course and I would urge all of you males out there to take note. Traditionally and to this present day many men were involved in the rug making business, this is your big opportunity to join in the fun and unleash your creative talent! Fibre Art and Maths?!?!

The Joint Mathematics Meetings is on from January 5-9 2009 in Washington DC, USA. They are held for the purpose of advancing mathematical achievement, encouraging research, and to provide the communication necessary to progress in the field. These meetings serve to preserve, supplement, and utilize the results of the research of mathematicians the world over. Keeping abreast of the progress in mathematics results in the furtherance of the interest of mathematical scholarship and research.

What’s this got to do with Textiles?

This year there is a Special Session on Mathematics and Mathematics Education in Fibre Arts being organized by Sarah-Marie Belcastro (Co-Director, Hamshire College Summer Studies in mathematics and Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Smith College) and Carolyn Yackel. (Mathematics Instructor, Mercer University).

These two women recently compiled and edited the book: Making Mathematics with Needlework: Ten Papers and Ten Projects". This book successfully connects the worlds of mathematics and the fiber arts. Each chapter covers a different mathematical paper and corresponding needlework project and includes mathematical explanations, needlework instructions, educational material, and specific projects to demonstrate the principles discussed.

They have arranged a series of talks on a variety of textile and mathematical links, along with a juried exhibition of Mathematical Fibre Arts, where you can see the maths at work.

There are now numerous websites and blogs dedicated to the fusion of Science and Fibre arts, and as the Woolly Way expands its search of interesting textile happenings from around the world, we will be posting articles and links, If you cant wait, and are excited about these developments as we are, then email us and we will give you any information we have gathered to date.

More information on the Joint Mathematics Meetings can be hound here

Thurs 4th Sept. Felted Jewellery -Combined wire, fibre and bead workshop. This is an exciting workshop that covers three techniques; making felt beads using a felting needle and washing machine; making wire connector ‘beads’ using a ‘twist and curl’ tool; the art of stitching beads onto the felt beads. There is a lot of attention to detail in this course, and will require some experience in needlework. €65.00

Fri 12th Sept. Needle felted figures – 3D needle felting, learn how to use a felting needle to sculpt wool, create wonderful little fairy folk, this craft has endless possibilities for a creative mind. Sat and Sun 4th and 5th Oct. 2 Day Batik Workshop with the talented Bernie Dignam. This is a detailed workshop that covers basic colour theory, transferring designs onto fabric, developing an understanding of the batik process and learning some batik techniques using a variety of tools. The craft of batik is at least 2000 years old but it was the Javanese that developed into an art form. Batik is a method of decorating fabric using wax resist. When dye is applied to waxed areas the dye resists those areas and is picked up by the unwaxed areas of fabric. This technique offers endless opportunities to create designs and images on fabric. Having understood the process the student will then go on to produce a simple stamp printed batik using the traditional ‘tjap’ along with a hand painted batik using ‘tjanting’ and brush. These pieces can then be finished at home by framing or creating a wall hanging. Cost €150.00

Joe Hogan has been making baskets at Loch na Fooey since 1978 and in that time has earned a reputation for making strong, durable baskets of the highest quality. The colours in these award winning baskets are those of the natural willows which are grown at Loch na Fooey. www.Joehoganbaskets.com
