We are going to be in slow mode for the next few weeks, as we are going on holidays. But have no fear, it will be as fibre orientated as we can possibly make it!
We will be scouting new places to visit, new suppliers, and hopefully have lots of shiny photographs to coincide with it...As mobile broadband in Ireland is well, still a thing to dream about, we will be a bit slower on the updates, and the replies.
Apologies in advance...
The Woolly Way is a comprehensive resource site for Textiles in Ireland. For practitioners, designers, hobbyists, groups, for the people at home and for visiting tourists.

The Crafty Alley, Co. Kerry
Just moved to a new premises in Killarney earlier this year, The Crafty Alley stocks a full range of artists materials, cardmaking and scrapbooking supplies, jewellery making, knitting and needle craft as well as education supplies.
But it's the great range of bits and bobs haberdashery every crafter loves to assemble, eg beads, ribbons, bag handles, teddy safety eyes, that keeps you in the shop!
All of which are available through their online shop, www.craftyalley.com
Workshops
They have a workshop area in the shop, where they run a series of workshops and classes throughout the year, both for adults and kids, from jewellery making to scrapbooking.
They graciously hosted the 2009 World Wide Knit in Public Day, which was a great success, (despite the intermittent showers!), and they plan on starting a knitting circle in September 2009.
So, check out their website and blog for further details.

Dolly's Cottage, Sligo

Dolly's Cottage is a 200-year-old traditional thatched cottage, the only one of its kind in the area. It is a stone built cottage with two rooms and a loft with original walls, roof, roof beams, fireplace and pouch bed. When you step through the little red door, it is like stepping into the past. Dolly''s Cottage has hardly changed in its 200 years and provides an experience of how people lived until the not so distant past.
The cottage is named after Dolly Higgins, the last person to live here. She was a genial soul, well loved by young and old in the district. When Dolly died in 1970 the cottage was purchased by the Strandhill Guild of the Irish Countrywomen''s Association with a view to preserving it for future generations.
It has been open to the public as a folk museum ever since; each weekend in June, every day in July and August and for groups by appointment during the rest of the year. The cottage is the ‘home’ of Strandhill ICA for meetings and classes during the rest of the year.
UPDATE: Here are the 2010 opening times
Admission is free.
Opening times: 2 - 5pm
During the summer there is a small craft shop at the cottage. All the money raised through sales and donations go towards the upkeep of the cottage.'

San Luis Valley Folk Arts and Fiber Festival, USA
MONTE VISTA – The San Luis Valley Folk Arts and Fiber Festival kicks off its third year on June 23, in Monte Vista, with an exhibit of fiber artists whose work spans the globe. The SLV Fest is a celebration of the handmade and traditional arts.
The SLV Fibre Festival will be hosting the International Freeform Crochet Guild Exhibit, "Four Seasons” from June 22-July 10 in Monte Vista. Over fourteen artists from Colorado to Australia and Ireland, will participate in this exhibit.
Admission to both the exhibit and festival are free. The opening reception for the exhibit is 5:30-7:30 PM, June 26th at the Monte Vista Information Center, 947 1st Avenue, in historic, downtown Monte Vista. The festival begins with a day of workshops in Marsh Park, Hwy 160, and an evening launch party at the Monte Vista Information Center from 6-8PM. Saturday and Sunday convene with two, full days of vendors, food, music, demonstrations, exhibits and contests—including the favorite wool spinning races.
From the International Freeform Guild website:
"… Freeform crochet is like painting. The hook is a brush and the yarn, a paint. The result can be abstract or realistic. Freeform is original design, not a reproduction of another person's pattern; it goes beyond the realm of patterns and restrictions that usually apply toward our art. The outcome is a piece of art like no other, not only functional, but beautiful as well. Freeform includes 2-D and 3-D art, clothing and useful items. “ Fifty-two artists contributed to the original show; At least fourteen will participate in the Monte Vista exhibit. Many of these artists exhibit locally and internationally; several have been published recurrently.
“Four Seasons” will be published in book form later this year. A calendar is also planned. All proceeds from the sales of both will benefit Woman for Woman, a non-profit organization that provides aid to women in war-torn countries.

We Felt United!
Browsing through the UN International Year of Natural Fibres website, I came this group We Felt United, "A not for profit group of felt artists with a vast ranging network reaching feltmakers across the planet through diverse associations, groups and guilds".
We Felt United started on Pat Spark’s Feltmakers List FAQ. If you have not come across this List before and you are into Felting, I seriously advise you to make a cup of tea, and grab a few biscuits beforehand. You'll need them, this list is impressive!
To help celebrate International Year of Natural Fibres, We Felt United, are organising the first International Day of Felt on 3rd October, 2009.
Felters around the world are encouraged to join together displaying Felt by exhibiting it outside their homes and studio's. If you are part of a group or community, why not start a project. If you have never felted before, try it out. We Felt United will also host an online exhibition of felt from across the world, and artists are invited to submit photographs of your work.
The theme for this year will be a slice of the colour wheel, yellow through red.
For more info on International Day of Felt, or on We Felt United, check out their website, www.feltunited.com
We have started a thread on The Woolly Way Forum, if anyone wants to organise or attend an event.

More on International Year of Natural Fibres
It's disappointing that there is not one official event in Ireland to celebrate UN International Year of Natural Fibres. (Here's a previous blog post about IYNF).
So, maybe we should have lots of little unofficial events. Earlier this year the Dublin Knit Collective organised a little swop, The Dublin DishCloth and Fairtrade Swop, to raise ecological and ethical awareness of products and goods in Ireland. They organised it through Ravelry. It was there first time organising a swop, and it was a great idea.
So, maybe we all could do something. If you are part of a knitting/spinning/patchwork group, why not have a Fairtrade/Natural Fibre Day. If you are an individual, go into your local yarn or fabric shop and ask about Fairtrade/Natural Fibre products. The more people that ask, the more freely available it will become.
Let us know if you are doing anything, and how it all worked out!
Watch this interesting video on YouTube all about IYNF.

A Few New Features!
We have added a few new features to our little blog, which we hope will make it more accessible, readable, and most important user-friendly. Here they are...
Woolly Way Stuff
This is a new section, which features our specially tailored Woolly Way Stuff. Our Textile Map, our new Calender, and our Forum.
New Calender
You can currently view it under Calender 2009, the old Diary Dates 09, or view it in Google Calender here...If you would like to add an event, simply email us the details woollywayATgmailDOTcom...
New Search
This blog started because there was nowhere to get info on all the various textile happenings in Ireland. What to see, what to do, etc, but as it is growing fast, with new posts almost daily, it can be a bit of a trawl to get through all the info. So, we have added a new Search feature. This will allow you to search for a particular item, link or website. For example, type in the word Felt, and it will give you a list of all the blog posts with the word felt, and all the other blogs and websites we have linked to.
New Followers
We were in two minds about whether to add a Followers section. Mainly because we didn't expect any! So, for the 5 followers that managed to follow without the handy follow button. We give you a big Thank You! We are very pleasantly surprised at the amount of people that return to read out humble blog, and this new feature is a salute to you...
Please bear with us, as we learn and update our new gadgets...

New Calender
Instead of our poor neglected Diary Dates, we have created a Calender. You can now easily search for workshops, classes, exhibitions, etc, each month. Just click on the event that interests you and up will pop all the details. All the details are there, eg, the when, the where and who. It is also linked up to google maps, and even better our very own Textile Map, so you can get directions to the venue . (Brilliant, thank you Google!)

These unique pieces are suitable for writing, painting, textile art- and collage works, stitching, embroidery and are ideal for 3 dimensional, sculptural projects. CALL FOR PAPER ARTISTS AND PAPERMAKERS
CALL FOR ARTISTS – PRESS RELEASE from Tunde Toth – Artist - Kozo Studio and Gallery
As a Paper and Fibre Artist I have recently travelled to Tasmania for the 20th IAPMA Congress (International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists). I have been invited both to present workshops and exhibit my art work at the Congress and the “New Paper – Old Land” international paper art exhibition.
I'm in the process of establishing the Irish Network/Guild of Paper Artists and Papermakers - a network that assists and promotes artists, makers and raises awareness and appreciation for an ancient art form and related contemporary practice. This network has a lot of potential: promoting member's practice through the network's own website, blogs, organizing exhibitions and educational programmes (workshops, talks, demonstrations, inviting artists of international repute...etc.) and benefiting from international networking opportunities.
I would like to hear from artists and makers – paper and fibre artists, hand papermakers, crafts people and visual artists working with handmade paper in their practice in various contexts - who are interested in taking part in this project.
To express your interest please send the following information via e-mail to: tundetune@gmail.com
* expression of interest and your full contact details
* indication on whether you are available during July to attend our first meeting, in Kilkenny or in Dublin.
FOR INFORMATION PURPOSES:

The Art of Swishing and Swopping!!
Here is Wikipedia's take on Swishing...
Swishing originally referred to swopping an item or items of clothing or shoes or an accessory with a friend or acquaintance. Both parties must willingly give an item to participate in the transaction, once they have given an item they are free to choose something of interest. Swishing has recently grown in popularity and often you will find yourself choosing an item given by a complete stranger but that is part of the fun.
It has become the way to keep fashionable, up-cycle your wardrobe, without spending money and having fun at the same time. Not just money saving though, swishing and swopping has become popular for other reasons. It is a great way of fundraising. You can hold swishing parties as to raise money for charity. If you are interested in organising your own swishing party, you can download some handy party packs from the BBC.
But also its about ethics, raising awareness about the downside of the textile industry. Re-dress, a one stop shop for sustainable fashion, organised a National Swop Day as part of their Fashion Evolution event in Dublin in May 2009. (Read more on that here).
So whether you want to Swish or Swop for ethical, monetary reaons or just plain fun, here is a list of dedicated Swishing/Swopping venue's around the country. If you know of any others, or are running an event please, let us know an we will add it to the list.
