I feel very guilty to the readers and also the lovely craftspeople who have always emailed me with info and details to post.<br />
<br />
The reason the blog has been neglected is because I have started doing a MA in Digital Culture through UCC. Although it was supposed to be part-time, I fear it is overwhelming me,
and I can say it is nearly full time! A whole world of digital has
opened up, sucking up my time either directly or indirectly. In a good
way though! I would like, while I have the opportunity to do this
course, to devote as much time to it as possible. So rather than let this blog just linger, I am going to close it for a few months. while I work on my project. But fear not, I hope the blog comes back bigger, and better than before!<br />
<br />
I am directing my research into the area
of activism. Using arts and crafts as a means of communication, using
digital tools, to make our world a better place. Craftivitsm! So, I am not entirely
devoid of craft! But more reading into the academic side of it, in the hope
of becoming more proficient about being able to write and talk about it.
And about why I feel it is so important for us, in this overpowering
digital age. I hope to do a lot of research on social media and design
tools that can help craftspeople, promote our work, and use our skills
for community activism. Conservation of crafts is also a key issue for
me, the conservation of skills. So history and heritage are also key points in my research.<br />
<br />
I have had to start
a new blog, and write about my research throughout the year, so I feel I
must step back on the other blogging fronts,such as this blog.<br />
<br />
If
you would like to follow my research, make suggestions, state opinions.
etc, as ever, you are most welcome to join me at my new blog <a href="http://fitefuaite.com/">Fite Fuaite </a>(Gaelige for intertwined) or a new Facebook page I have set up for my research <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Fite-Fuaite-533374920154229/">Fite Fuaite.</a><br />
<br />
I am very interested to hear from anyone, their views on technology, digital culture, for good or bad. The email is still in use, so simply email me at woollyway@gmail.com<br />
<br />
Thank you for all your support for the blog to date, and hopefully we'll be chatting again soon!<br />

<img alt="" height="300" src="http://www.creativereview.co.uk/images/uploads/2015/08/img_3089_0.jpg" style="font-size: 0.85em; line-height: 1.38em;" width="400" /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<em><span>The Jane Austen Book Club cover by Helen Musselwhite</span></em></div>
<br />
We recently came across this article on '<a href="http://www.creativereview.co.uk/cr-blog/2015/august/penguin-by-hand-series">Creative Review'</a>, about a series of Penguin books that are being re-published, with re-designed covers. Naturally enough, we love them!!<br />
<br />
Six of Penguin's most popular recent fiction titles have been
redesigned as a set with new craft-inspired covers. The Penguin By Hand
series makes use of embroidery, crochet and quilting, with each
technique further evoked on paper through the use of some serious
embossing...<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Publishing in September, the Penguin By Hand series features the
following titles: The Forty Rules of Love by Elif Shafak (cover by <a href="http://cargocollective.com/emmaruth" target="_blank">Emma Ruth Hughes</a>); The Help by Kathryn Stockett (cover by <a href="http://acornquiltandgiftcompany.com/" target="_blank">Brenda Riddle</a>); The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing by Melissa Banks (cover by <a href="http://www.genevievedionne.com/" target="_blank">Genevieve Dionne</a>); The Postmistress by Sarah Blake (cover by <a href="http://www.jennyhart.net/" target="_blank">Jenny Hart</a>); The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler (cover by <a href="http://www.helenmusselwhite.co.uk/" target="_blank">Helen Musselwhite</a>); and The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards (cover by <a href="http://www.dominiquefalla.com/" target="_blank">Dominique Falla</a>).<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="" height="300" src="http://www.creativereview.co.uk/images/uploads/2015/08/img_3094_0.jpg" width="400" /> </div>
<br />
In addition to being highly tactile books, the covers are surprisingly
good at replicating the media they were originally created in – for
instance, Brenda Riddle's cover for The Help looks and feels as if it
has been made from quilted material.<span></span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="http://cdn.theatlantic.com/static/mt/assets/food/Emma_CoverEDIT.jpg" class="shrinkToFit" height="320" src="http://cdn.theatlantic.com/static/mt/assets/food/Emma_CoverEDIT.jpg" width="212" /></div>
<br />
<span>Penguin have also commissioned artist <a data-omni-click="r'article',r'link',r'1',r'73177'" href="http://www.jilliantamaki.com/about/about/">Jillian Tamaki</a> to design hand-sewn covers of three classics: Jane Austen's <a data-omni-click="r'article',r'link',r'2',r'73177'" href="http://www.amazon.com/Emma-Penguin-Classics-Jane-Austen/dp/014119247X/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1301415136&sr=8-14"><i>Emma</i></a>, Frances Hodgson Burnett's <a data-omni-click="r'article',r'link',r'3',r'73177'" href="http://www.amazon.com/Secret-Garden-Penguin-Classics/dp/0142437050/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1301415201&sr=1-1"><i>The Secret Garden</i></a>, and Anna Sewell's <i><a data-omni-click="r'article',r'link',r'4',r'73177'" href="http://www.amazon.com/Black-Beauty-Penguin-Popular-Classics/dp/0140621490/ref=sr_1_6?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1301415266&sr=1-6">Black Beaut</a>y</i>.</span><br />
<br />
Tamaki
sketched the illustrations before stitching these designs with a needle
and thread. The final covers are sculpt-embossed, maintaining some of
the tactile texture of the original threads designs.<br />
Although each
book is new to the Penguin Classics Deluxe series, it seems Penguin
chose these three books for various unrelated reasons. This will be the
first standalone edition of <i>Emma</i>, this year marks the centennial of <i>The Secret Garden</i>'s publication, and <i>Black Beauty</i> features a new foreword written by Pulitzer Prize winner Jane Smiley.<br />

<br />
We recently came across an interesting Nordic website <a href="http://textelis.net/">textelis.net</a>, which has some very interesting articles on textiles and archaeology. It belongs to Viveka Hansed , a professional textile historian.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"The chosen path for my education in textile history is rare and based on
a symbiosis of practical textile training within the Swedish Handicraft
Association, theoretical work and academic studies primarily in the
humanity subjects. Through the years I have completed further
theoretical research in European collections, first and foremost in the
United Kingdom and the Nordic countries. Added with textile experiments –
in the areas of historical weaving, dyeing, needlework, knitting,
plaiting and lace – so in the best possible way be able to develop new
contexts for questions related to my work."</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: center;">
If you have an interest in this area, or even just a bit of free time, we highly recommend reading some of her articles! </div>

<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: black;">Ornamental
Embroidery will be running a three-hour workshop inspired by the work
of the Lethbridge sisters, Julia Baroness Carew (1863-1922) and Lady
Jane Cory (1865-1947). </span></span></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0.18cm; margin-top: 0.18cm;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: black;">During their lifetime the sisters were famed
throughout society for the needlework skills and for the scale of the
embroideries they produced for Castleboro in Co. Wexford, the Carews'
ancestral home, and for their town house in London. </span></span></span><br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: black;">Julia’s passion
was for antique work: Italian Renaissance designs, Chinese willow
pattern and crewel embroidery in the Jacobean style based on the
universal symbol of the 'tree of life’. Jane preferred figurative
compositions, including the work of contemporary artists and
designers of the Arts and Crafts Movement, including Edward
Burne-Jones, Henry Holiday and Alexander Fisher. One Wexford
neighbour, Edward Richards-Orpen of Monksgrange, recalled in his
memoirs, ‘To see them bending over their remarkable tapestry work
was clearly pre-Raphaelite at best; the astonishing industries of
[the sisters] has to be seen to be believed.’ </span></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">We received a wonderful email from </span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><i>Marion

It is heartwarming to see one of the few remaining traditional linen weaving mills thriving! They have expanded their business and their workforce, bringing much needed life to a small town. Indeed, one of their projects is quite interesting. The email contained lots of news, and is full of life, so we will just quote it, rather then giving small digested tracts. Especially when its tactile and animated. We recently spotted these on <a href="http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2015/07/fantastic-embroidered-zoetrope-animations-on-turntables-by-elliot-schultz/">This is Colossal</a>, and just fell in love with them!! These were made by Elliot Schultz for his final project in college.<br />

"...My work aims to investigate the use of unconventional media in both
the production and presentation of animated work. Early pioneers of the
art form experimented with the combination of hand drawn animation and
live action performances, demonstrating the natural inclusiveness of
animation which invites a wide variety of media to be used in the
creation process.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Inspired by the work of Alexandre Alexeieff and Claire Parker, I
aimed to guide my production process indirectly through the limitations
afforded by alternative media. Their invention, the pin screen, was used
as the sole medium in the production of six short films, and shaped the
outcome of their work. In response, I have designed and embroidered
animated sequences onto discs, similar to the Phenakistokope,
Zoopraxiscope and Stamfer Disc layouts. This repurposing of media
introduced strict parameters, namely spatial, tonal and temporal, and
has greatly informed all stages of my process..."</div>
