The International Crocheted Coral Reef is coming to The Science Gallery, Dublin in Spring 2010. An Irish Crocheted Coral Reef will be exhibited along side it.

If you are part of a stitching group, ICA, a teacher, a student, this is a fantastic community textile project that you can to get involved in. It ticks all the right boxes; environmental awareness, open to every one young and old, to new and old hands at crochet, teachers of art and science and maths, etc.You can work as a group or as an individual. Every piece of crochet makes a difference.
If you are not into the sciency side of it, that's fine! The crochet is very easy, and it's great for using up oddments of yarn.
There are 3 sections to the Irish Crocheted Coral Reef, and we need people to crochet for all three:
- Coral Reef - can be made up of any yarn type, any size, any colour. The variety makes it exciting.
- Bleached Reef - is a reflection of what happens to coral reefs when they die. They loose all their life and all their colour. We need white or pale crochet to make the Bleached Reef.
- Plastic Reef - is made out of all types of plastic recycled materials. This represents the destruction caused to the reefs by plastic waste, and would be a great project for students to do. Any type or colour of plastic is suitable.
The
deadline is the end of February 2010, which isn't a huge amount of time. The Science Gallery will be updating their website to hold all the information, patterns etc, but here are links to websites, other reefs, patterns, talks and lectures about the Hyperbolic Crochet, and about the Coral Reef project, to get you started.
There will be workshops organised by The Science Gallery, but if you are interested in finding out more, please get in touch, and we will help you in any way we can,
