National Heritage Week 2010


 21st to 29th August 2010.

“The Heritage Council seeks to protect and enhance the richness, quality and diversity of our national heritage for everyone.  We work with our partners, particularly at a local level to increase awareness of Irelands national heritage and to highlight it’s importance to public policy and everyday life.”

There is a great range of textile activities around the country. Here is a few examples:
  • Talk & Demonstration: Spinning On The 'Big Wheel' – The Sheep and Wool Centre, Leenan, Co. Galway 
  • Wool Weaving & Rug Making Demonstration - Ballycroy National Park Visitor Centre, Mayo
  • Weaving & Spinning Demonstration - Weaver's Cottages, Clonegal Village, County Carlow 
  • Wool Craft & Traditional Clothing on an Aran Island -Galway City Museum, Spanish Parade Galway  
  • Open Day With Feltmakers Ireland: Craft Demonstrations And Display Of Felt Work - Feltmakers Studio & Yurt, Knockmaroon Gate, Phoenix Park, Dublin
  • Free Felting Fun - The Yarn Room, Ashford Village, Co. Wicklow  
  • Time For Tea: Exhibition of Knitting -Macroom Library, Briery Gap, Main Street, Macroom, Cork

List of events on at the Sheep & Wool Centre Leenane for Heritage Week

Sunday 22nd – Feltmaking for children with Deirdre Duffy, Textile Designer.
Ever tried feltmaking? Textile artist, Deirdre Duffy will be running this fun feltmaking workshop. Drop in workshops between 12.00 - 16.00. All children must be accompanied by an adult. FREE EVENT.

Tuesday 23rd -Sheep Hill Walk
Take a guided walk with local farmer, Jim O'Neill and learn about hill sheep farming in the local area. 12:00 - 14:00pm Booking is essential. Spaces limited.

Wednesday 25th – Wild Colours. Natural Wool Dyeing with Patricia Kirwan Doyle.
Traditionally colour for cloth came from nature. Learn about natural dyeing on this workshop with Patricia Kirwan Doyle. Two Workshops times: 11.00am - 1.00pm and 2.30pm - 4.30pm. Spaces are limited. Booking required. Age 12 plus. 5 euro

Friday 27th – Frame Weaving
Join Patricia Kirwan Doyle for a basic frame weaving workshop. View old cloth and looms in the museum. Two workshops: 11.00am - 1.00pm; 2.30pm - 4.30pm. Spaces are limited. Booking is essential. Age 7 years plus. 5 euro

Saturday 28st 2pm-3pm Talk and Demonstration: Big Wheel.
The spinning of the 'big wheel' is a rare skill. Join Orla O'Toole for this talk and demonstration. Drop in event. FREE EVENT

Sunday 29th August Knitalong Sunday. 10.00am – 6.00pm
Join the Knit-along Sunday knitting challenge and see how much we can knit in one day. Knitting volunteers needed. Celebrate the last day of National Heritage Week with this fun day. Beginners welcome. FREE EVENT
