One of my favourite museums, the Chester Beatty Library, is hosting an exhibition of 150 plates from the fashion magazine  Journal des Dames et des Modes (1912-1914). You can read more about it here.

 

They are hosting a series of talk on fashion throughout the exhibition, full details here

 "One hundred years after the publication of the fashion magazine Journal des Dames et des Modes (1912-1914), the Chester Beatty Library is delighted to open an exhibition featuring almost 150 of the Journal’s unique fashion illustrations, known as Costumes Parisiens. In 1912, while the first plates were under production, Chester Beatty was negotiating the purchase and renovation of Baroda House, London. The following spring, Beatty set sail for England, accompanied by his children and soon to be second wife, Edith Dunn Stone. New York society acclaimed Edith as one of the ten most beautiful women in America. Beatty and Edith shared a love of art and ancient literature and she encouraged his evolving collecting practices. It was likely the fashion conscious Edith who prompted him to acquire this fashion magazine.
The Journal was founded by Tom Antongini, writer, and secretary and friend to the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio. It included society columns, poetic texts, anecdotal observations, book and theatre reviews, and fashion reports. Thanks to his connection with D’Annunzio, Antongini was able to collaborate with notable writers of the day, like Anatole France, who wrote the introduction to the first issue: ‘…One knows nothing about a society when one knows nothing of the fashions that prevailed in it. Costumes reveal customs…"

But it is above all a matter of attiring oneself, and whoever says attire says ornament, and whoever says ornament says art… So, ladies, be stylish. It is a great civic duty. Though Notre-Dame is a cathedral, it is nonetheless une dame. May your exterior be also the cathedral of your soul …’

Studio Nineteen, Belfast

Studio Nineteen, is a home of creativity, based in Belfast.

Studio Nineteen workshops are taught by Rosie Moore and Becky Moore, friends who met through a shared love of vintage fashion, needlework, knitting and posing for photographs. Both have been stitching since knee high, for pleasure and business, and whenever they get time to sit still they can usually be found clicking away on their knitting needles.

We run a range of sewing, knitting and customising workshops for all ages and abilities.

We believe that learning is easy when it's fun so our workshops are professional, relaxed, friendly and dedicated to teaching you lifelong practical skills. It is totally up to you whether you use those skills for pleasure or business, to save money or make money.

Our studio is located at Conway Mill in Belfast, a listed building steeped in history, tradition and community spirit, making it the perfect environment for the learning of traditional crafts.

Our workshops have no huge time commitment so you can learn valuable skills in just one day and you decide if and when you advance to a higher level - we will take you as far as you want to go.

The 4th Annual Kerry Fashion Weekend

 

The 4th annual Kerry Fashion Weekend (KFW) 

Thursday 12th to Saturday 14th of April 2012 

in the Kingdom of Style - Kerry.  

 This is the fourth annual KFW and it is now nationally acknowledged as one of Ireland’s most prestigious fashion events. KFW has been responsible for both discovering and encouraging Kerry and Irish fashion designer talents. Previous winners have included bridal designers, Delphine Grandjouan and Caroline Atelier; womenswear designers, Sinead Doyle, Karyn Moriarty and Matt Doody, milliners Carol Kennelly, Kathleen McAuliffe and Michael Leong and jeweller Lisa Dora.   

Judges for the event have included such established industry names as Louise Kennedy, Joanne Hynes, Don O Neill, Liadan Hynes, Debbie O Donnell, Eilis Boyle, Peter O Brien, Bairbre Power and Melanie Morris. Ireland's top fashion glossy magazine, IMAGE magazine, have supported the event since the beginning, giving much needed exposure to both the entrants and the winners. 

KFW and the winners have also received the on going, valued support of both local and national media and the organisers wish to sincerely thank the media for their coverage of the events and individual designers. Killarney Crystal have also sponsored the magnificent winners trophies since 2009 and we are delighted to confirm that they are once again on board for 2012.

One of the highlights of the event annually is the KFW designer Awards. 

Once again this year, there are both Kerry and National Awards Categories. 

The main categories are:

• KFW Irish Designer of the Year (national entries welcome) 2012

• KFW Kerry Designer of the Year 2012 (Kerry born designer or designer based in Kerry)

• KFW One to Watch (national entries welcome) 2012

• KFW Irish Accessory Designer of the Year (national entries welcome) 2012

• There is also a KFW Special Merit Award, given annually by the judges to a designer from Kerry who has excelled in their craft both in artistic and business terms. Previous winners of this category are master jeweller, Brian de Staic and womens-wear couturier Matt Doody. 

This year the KFW Designer Awards Show will be held in the Pavilions at Ballygarry House Hotel, Tralee, County Kerry on Thursday 12th of April.

"Made in Ireland" - New Fashion Initiative launched by ReDress

Re-dress have launched a ‘Made in Ireland’ Swing Tag to acknowledge Fashion and Accessories produced in Ireland

The ‘made in Ireland’ project has been founded by Re-dress as a response to the growing need for support for the Irish fashion sector. The aim of the project is to increase the visibility of fashion products that are made in Ireland.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

To clearly identify fashion products that are produced in Ireland.

To promote the products, brands and organisations that are awarded membership of the made in Ireland project through consumer campaigns, press outreach and industry networks.

To connect the craft, design and manufacturing sectors operational in Ireland and promote collaboration and trade between them.

To identify opportunities for growth within the Irish fashion and design industries in both the domestic and export markets.

STRUCTURE
The made in Ireland project is a membership organisation managed, monitored and administrated by Re-dress The Better Fashion Initiative Ltd. – a not-for-profit organisation promoting better fashion practice within the fashion industry.

APPLICATION PROCESS
Membership will be assessed through an invitation, application and / or referral process. Membership will be awarded to those who’s products meet the standards as set our in the membership criteria matrix and project charter. Applications will be processed on by a combination of self-assessment & peer review.

Logo
Phase one of the project development will be the release of a universally adopted made in Ireland logo displayed by all members on their products covered under the charter and any marketing / press or promotional material subsequently developed.A choice of branded material will be made available to all members and will include swing-tags, small labels, window decals and POS display stands.

Website
The tag will be accompanied by an explanatory website with listings of all participating members. Each listing will include contact information, product / editorial  imagery description of the product manufacturing process / place and links to home-pages / members websites.

Launch
Providing the successful adoption and incorporation of both - a long-term marketing strategy will be implemented starting with a co-ordinated press call and marketing push to launch the logo on November 24th 2011

The initiative has already been embraced by stellar figures from the Irish Fashion world including; Heather Finn, Lisa Shawgi, Emma Kate Manley, Yvonne Ryan, Eily O Connor, Eoin McDonnagh, and designer Sinéad Doyle, commented on the importance of the Made in Ireland ethos to both Irish Fashion and Irish Trade,

Fashion Design Camp for Teenagers, Co. Cavan

Be a Fashion Designer for a week!

 Learn how to design and manufacture your very own special creation to bring home at the end of the week! 

27 June to 29 July 2011

A week long camp for teenagers aged 12 – 18,  with a flair for art, design and creating something new. Not intended specifically for those wishing to go to art college, however this course is a fantastic stepping stone for someone interested in pursuing a creative career. All aspects of design, pattern cutting, knitting on machines, hand and machine sewing are taught on the course. Low numbers per group to allow one-on-one teaching. Each student can create their own garment to bring home at the end of the week. While doing all the design work and preparation, a portfolio of work is assembled and this can also be brought home. A fantastic course whether you want to be a designer in the future, whether you wish to explore different aspects of art and design OR if you just want to do something completely different during the summer holidays.
