15th JUNE (Sunday): BATIK Techniques 

for beginners and participants with some previous experience

This is a full day course n BATIK: introducing a traditional, ancient technique of dyeing and decorating fabrics using hot wax as a resist and fabric dyes. Covering various techniques and some contemporary processes this workshop offers an overview and an insight into this fascinating art form.

Fee: € 70 for the full day workshop – INCLUDING all materials

6th JULY (Sunday): PAPERMAKING DAY

10am - 1pm: HAND PAPERMAKING – beginners and/or some experience

Introducing traditional and contemporary techniques of making beautiful textured and decorated handmade papers from pure plant fibres and recycled materials. The course covers all necessary basics  to be able to continue papermaking at home. 

Participants will make unique, plain or decorated, textured handmade papers (5/7 pieces).

2.30 – 5.30pm: SILK FIBRE PAPERMAKING – beginners and/or some experience

This workshop introduces contemporary techniques used in silk papermaking using a variety of raw silk fibres combined with plant fibres and dyes; creating unique, colourful, striking silk papers ideal for many projects: collage works, decorations, textile art processes and sculptural/installation projects.

Fee: € 35 per workshop OR € 65 for the full day – INCLUDING all materials

 Workshop participants are invited to contribute to the large scale, ongoing indoor/outdoor installation by making striking, colourful butterflies – using traditional Origami techniques and contemporary Silk Fibre Papermaking processes.

This is a family oriented programme: all workshops are suitable for children from 7 years of age, young people and adults!

11am – 12.30pm; 1.30 – 3pm; 4 – 5.30pm

Advanced Papermaking Workshop, Co. Kilkenny

FOLLOW-ON COURSE on HAND PAPERMAKING TECHNIQUES and CONTEMPORARY PAPER ART

21st July (Sunday)   10.30am - 5.30pm

at the new Community Hall in the centre of INISTIOGE village, Co. Kilkenny

This is an advanced level course suitable for participants with some previous experience in hand papermaking processes (traditional or contemporary);  it is also designed to suit those of you who have participated at any of my papermaking/paper art courses previously.

The workshop is tailored to the interests and needs of those attending, offering a creative space, time and professional advice for working on individual ideas.

Processes and areas covered (priorities will be given upon request):

• Three dimensional and sculptural works; moulded, shaped, textured paper projects
• Handmade papers for artworks and crafts: intaglio printmaking, calligraphy, painting/drawing/writing/bookmaking etc.
• Ideas and planning for installation projects and large scale works
• Preparation for various projects using pure plant material: preparation of plant pulps without the use of chemicals; combination of pulps and silk fibre papers;
• Paper sizing, strengthening, dyeing, painting; 
• Batik on handmade plant and silk papers;
• Hand Papermaking in primary school education and community art projects 

Participants are invited and encouraged to bring their own works/ideas/plans/sketches/questions etc with them -  we would love to see what are you working on and what are you interested in!

The course is designed for a small group so places are limited. 

This programme is only available once or twice in a year so please call to book your place as soon as possible!!

Workshop Fee: € 75 for the full day, INCLUDING ALL MATERIALS, coffee/tea/refreshments.

Thursday 20^th September - Silk Paper Making - Learn all about silk fibre and how to make luscious sheets of silk paper and embossed silk paper leaves. Silk paper is very strong and can be cut and stitched for further surface embellishment for use in greetings cards, collage, hollow forms etc.

Friday 12^th October – Textile Art Jewellery Making – using commercial felt and other materials learn how to create these stunning rolled textile beads. This workshop involves aspects of design, bead work, wirework, basic jewellery making techniques and stitching. There will be a wide range of exciting materials to choose for embellishment such as metallic threads, wire and beads. The ability to use a fine needle and thread are required for this class. Cost €75.00

Sunday 21^st October - Copper Art Clay with Lise Fahy - Spend a day making jewellery using ArtClay Copper. ArtClay Copper is a clay-like material embedded with particles of pure copper, which is fired in kiln to produce stunning pure copper jewellery, In this full day course, participants will receive 25 grams of copper, which is enough to make several large pendants. Over the course of the day, you will learn the basic skills for working with copper art clay (skills which can also be applied to working with silver clay). Please note that firing and preparing copper clay for finishing takes an hour, so we will run a number of firings throughout the day, with the last firing taking place at 2.45pm. Cost €90.00

Friday 26^th October – 1 Day Luxury Jewellery Making Workshop – make a gorgeous sterling silver charm bracelet, using semi precious stones, hand made flame worked glass beads, fresh water pearls, faceted crystals, silver charms and findings. This workshop involves aspects of design and wirework techniques……. how to combine beads and findings to make dangles and how to make wire wrapped loops to securely attach the dangles to the bracelet. All the charms and findings are sterling silver. The price includes all materials for a 7 to 8 inch sterling silver bracelet and up to 12 dangles. Cost €120.00 per person

Thursday 8th November - Metal work - Make a unique pendant or a garden ornament using copper sheet, art glass beads and wire. This workshop offers aspects of design and many techniques using wire and sheet copper....forging, cutting, disc making, melting wire into ball ends and how to make  wire wrapped loops.  Cost €75.00 (4 places left)

All courses run from 10am to 4.30pm. Please bring a packed lunch – I provide drinks and light refreshments. A 50% deposit is required with bookings. This weekend course offers the option to take part in both day's workshops or choose between Hand Papermaking (from plant fibres and recycled materials) or Silk Fibre Papermaking

The PAPERMAKING weekend programme also includes a short slide show and talk on the 20th IAPMA Congress in Tasmania in 2009 and an overview of contemporary paper art practices.

HAND PAPERMAKING

learning basic skills and processes of hand papermaking, using recycled materials and pure plant fibres.

SILK FIBRE PAPERMAKING

2 - 4pm

making colourful, striking decorations from raw silk fibres, silk tops, plant fibres and embroidery threads

- while learning one of the techniques used in Silk Fibre (fusion) Papermaking

BATIK 

5 - 7pm

creating colourful pattern and design on cloth through a traditional fabric dyeing process where hot wax is used as a resist. Participants will work on small pieces that are suitable for card making, collage and various textile projects.
