Tomomi McElwee of Slaney HandCraft has opened a patchwork quilt studio in Co. Carlow. There you can purchase ready-made quilts or order a custom-made quilt, buy a selection of cotton fabric and accessories for quilt making or join a class.

Since establishing her studio earlier this year, Tomomi has been teaching a weekly drop-in class on Wednesday mornings and is now taking bookings for a six weeks Autumn course for beginners starting 9th of September.

In this six week course you will learn all the basics of quilt making:

Rotary cutting

Machine stitching

Block building

Sashing

Adding border

Quilting by machine

Binding off

Time and Date : From 9th September to 14th October on Tuesdays, for six weeks, 7p.m. - 9p.m.

'Flora, Fibre and Fabric' Irish Patchwork Society Exhibition - Hands Across the Border 2013

The bi-annual Hands Across the Border Exhibition, which is run by the Irish Patchwork Society (IPS) and the Northern Ireland Patchwork Guild (NPIG), will take place again in the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin this summer. Featuring over sixty specially selected quilts from all over Ireland exploring the theme of flora, fabric and fibre. 

Also, if you are interested in learning how to do patchwork just drop into the free workshops for adults on Friday 12th, and Thursdays 18th and 25th of July from 10.00am to 12.00pm.

Workshops for children will be held Tuesdays 16th, 23rd and 29th of July from 11.00am to 1.00pm.

By taking the part-time courses based in Cork & detailed below, two of Ireland’s most experienced teachers will guide you step-by-step through hand and machine techniques of piecing, appliqué and quilting, and the mysteries of colour and design.

1 Year Foundation course –
here you will learn the basics of patchwork & quilting and a simple design ABC to enable you to make your own, unique quilt.

2 Year Intermediate course –
this is for you if you love fabrics and sewing and maybe have a basic knowledge of patchwork and quilting. You are looking to expand your range of methods and techniques, including dyeing and printing, learn how to explore colours and images and translate these into designs and how to take a project from idea to completion.

2 Year Diploma course –
for experienced stitchers. The equivalent of a 3rdlevel course; this takes design and technique to a different level where you research a chosen theme through art and sampling and plan and create 3 major pieces of work. You also study historical and contemporary quilt-making and explore unusual materials and techniques.

On completing the Foundation course you will receive an “Irish Quilt & Design Studio” Certificate of Merit

On completing the Intermediate and Diploma courses you will receive the prestigious, internationally recognised, City and Guilds Certificates

The CTN Annual Textile Conference has grown in strength, and prestige since it began, and the number of attendees rises each year. This year, to cater for the numbers and also for anyone who may not be practice textiles, but has an interest in art, history or archaeology of textiles, half day and day tickets are now available.

On Saturday there will be talks by renowned textile artists including Matthew Harris, Elizabeth Brimelow, Amanda Gizzi. Speakers also include Eileen France on the ‘Cork Museum Lace Collection’, and Emer Fahy, ‘A History of Irish Quilts'.

“The Honan Chapel, in UCC, and its liturgical collection are products of the Irish Arts & Crafts Movement (1894-1925). The designers were searching for a new sense of Irish national identity on the threshold of political independence from Britain. This was expressed by looking back to the traditions of Celtic art and Hiberno-Romanesque architecture and blending them with contemporary tastes for Art Nouveau.” 

Textile Archaeologist, Libby Heckett, will give a talk on the Honan Textiles, while former director of the Hunt Museum, and current director of Cultural Projects at UCC, Virginia Teehan will give a talk on the Chapel  

On Sunday there will be workshops in Sketchbooks, Patchwork, Weaving, Needle-Felt

Machine Embroidery and Wire Forms

Workshops run Sunday 10.00am to 4.30pm with an hour for lunch

"Unlike other quilt festivals and conventions held around the world, where all the functions take place in an enormous convention hall, our festival will be located on the beautiful NUI campus in Galway, Ireland, where we are designing a special Quilter’s Village on the banks of the River Corrib. Here you’ll be able to walk around and enjoy all the special attractions this village has to offer.

There will be a Quilter’s Market where you can buy everything from Irish crafts to traditional Irish Brown Bread, the Fat Quarters Chocolate Shop, a School House for our hands-on quilting classes, a Quilter's Canteen that seats over 800 people, over a dozen special quilt exhibits on display in various buildings throughout the village, and the Town Hall, where you will find over 50 vendors who have created booths to tease you with their latest state-of-the-art products and services!"

One Day Quilting Workshop with Nikki of The Sewing Shed, The Crafty Alley, Co. Kerry

We have just confirmed that Nikki of the Sewing Shed - www.thesewingshed.ie (And of Nationwide fame this week) will be doing a one day quilting workshop here in the Shop on Saturday the 15th January from 10am onwards. The price is €50 which includes all materials. Nikki is an extremely talented quilter and artist and this will be a very enjoyable class.
