Update on Updates!

Hi folks, just to let you know, I have a few very busy weeks ahead, so updates to the blog will be a bit slow. However, please keep the emails/listings coming, and I will get round to it when I can. If you are sending in info, please keep the format simple, that way I can post the info up quicker. (PDFs are easy to send but always have to be reformatted before posting).

Also, there will be no updates from about  13th - 25th June 2011, so if you have an event running during that time. Make sure you get the info to me before those dates.

Thanks!

Woolly Way Map Update

The Textile Map of Ireland is a great resource, and it's not just for tourists. With the recession and the volcano disrupting normal Irish holidaying patterns, a lot of Irish are staying at home this summer. It is, however, in serious need of updating.

If anyone has any venues, museums, textile studios, or other places they think should be listed on the Map, please pass the details on!

You can simply leave a comment with a name, address, link, etc, or you can email us at woollyway AT gmail DOT com

 Heritage Crafts Association,  UK

EDITED: I've edited this post, as I got some info wrong!! It was my own fault, someone sent me an email about it, and I should have checked to make sure the details were correct.  I had said, the Heritage Crafts Association in the UK have started a map, and charge for your listing.  But they dont, listing is free, but you can pay a small fee become a Friend of the Heritage Crafts Association. My humble apologies...

The HCA are a fantastic group, I visited their website many times, and I have added their Map to my Map list. Although not strictly textiles, they have enought lovely felters, dyers, weavers, etc, on their listings to warrant a link!

A Few New Features!

We have added a few new features to our little blog, which we hope will make it more accessible, readable, and most important user-friendly. Here they are...

Woolly Way Stuff
This is a new section, which features our specially tailored Woolly Way Stuff. Our Textile Map, our new Calender, and our Forum.

New Calender

Instead of our poor neglected Diary Dates, we have created a Calender. You can now easily search for workshops, classes, exhibitions, etc, each month. Just click on the event that interests you and up will pop all the details. All the details are there, eg, the when, the where and who. It is also linked up to google maps, and even better our very own Textile Map, so you can get directions to the venue . (Brilliant, thank you Google!)

You can currently view it under Calender 2009, the old Diary Dates 09, or view it in Google Calender here...If you would like to add an event, simply email us the details
woollywayATgmailDOTcom...

New Search
This blog started because there was nowhere to get info on all the various textile happenings in Ireland. What to see, what to do, etc, but as it is growing fast, with new posts almost daily, it can be a bit of a trawl to get through all the info. So, we have added a new Search feature. This will allow you to search for a particular item, link or website. For example, type in the word Felt, and it will give you a list of all the blog posts with the word felt, and all the other blogs and websites we have linked to.

New Followers

We were in two minds about whether to add a Followers section. Mainly because we didn't expect any! So, for the 5 followers that managed to follow without the handy follow button. We give you a big Thank You! We are very pleasantly surprised at the amount of people that return to read out humble blog, and this new feature is a salute to you...

Please bear with us, as we learn and update our new gadgets...

Update from KOZO Studio: ART WORKSHOP PROGRAMME - June 2009

We continue our workshop programme with a number of courses on various Hand Papermaking Techniques coming up in May and June – a great way to start Summer time! There are workshops for beginners and for those who have previous experience in the unusual and fascinating art form of hand paper making and paper art.

There is more to come, we have a number of workshops to follow in August, September and October and we have organized a programme of SUMMER ART CAMPS for children at the St. Mary's National School in Thomastown for the month of July.

All KOZO Workshops and Courses are facilitated by established artists and experienced arts educators, follow an experimental approach to learning and in most cases can be tailored to the specific needs to those attending.

All workshops are held at purpose built, well equipped studios, for a limited number of participants per class.

WORKSHOP at AIRFIELD HOUSE, Studio 1

SILK PAPERMAKING II. - Experimental Fibre Art

WORKSHOPS at CASTLERIN STUDIOS AND WORKSHOPS
Bennettsbridge, Co. Kilkenny
13th June (Saturday) 10.30am – 5.30pm

HAND PAPERMAKING Techniques I.
This is a one-day workshop on hand papermaking techniques, using natural fibres of cotton, bamboo, abaca and esparto grass combined with recycled material. Participants will be introduced to basic, traditional and contemporary techniques of hand paper making. Incorporating dried flowers, herbs and other plant material into layers of wet pulp, they will create several different papers, textured pieces and unique images. Due to the naturally slow drying process handmade papers will need to be transported while wet and dried at home.

This course is suitable for beginners or participants with some experience in Hand Papermaking.
Tutor: Tunde Toth – Fibre artist, paper maker, arts facilitator, KOZO Studio
Fee: € 80 – including all art materials (full time students: € 70)

SILK PAPERMAKING Techniques I.
This is a one-day, experimental workshop, introducing two techniques used in Silk Papermaking.
Using a variety of natural materials – raw silk and bamboo fibres, cocoon strippings, hand dyed silk tops, throwsters fibres, silk threads...etc – participants will create plain or colourful, textured, decorative, ``fabric – like`` papers. These unique pieces are suitable for writing, painting, textile art- and collage works, stitching, embroidery and are ideal for 3 dimensional, sculptural projects. The workshop also introduces experimental processes, decorating methods and ideas using fibre reactive textile dyes on silk papers. This course is suitable for beginners or participants with some experience in Hand Papermaking.
Tutor: Tunde Toth – Fibre artist, paper maker, arts facilitator, KOZO Studio
Fee: € 85 – including all art materials (full time students: € 75)

Happy New Year

Welcome to 2009, we hope you all had a good Christmas and New Year.

The fairy lights are being packed away, the thank-you notes posted, and the plans for 2009 are coming together. Here are a few ideas we have had so far...

  • We are going to make a Woolly Way Website. This will hold info on shops, museums, online suppliers, groups, etc..and the blog hold all the juicy bits, events, groups, links and ramblings...
  • We are going to have to have a competitions throughout the year, so keep checking back for updates
  • We will have book reviews, interviews, and all the latest up-to-date info
  • To try help promote textiles to parents and teachers, we hope to create a children's corner with ideas and projects using textiles with kids
  • We will create a database of textile teachers and artists in Ireland
  • (My favourite!) To create The Woolly Way Roadshow! To create a merry band of woolites who will demonstrate and teach textiles in a fun way.
According to all the magazines, making things is in. So, lets get in there with our craft and remind the people of Ireland about our wonderful skills...

We are always looking for info, stories, reviews, etc. You don't have to live in Ireland, to help us on our Woolly Quest, all input is gladly received...Check out our Submissions page for more info on how you could get involved...
