"Five selected textile artists are invited to choose a collaborator or mentor with whom to produce a work provoked by huge the immense hanging textile work Valkyrie Enxoval by Joana Vasconcelos, which will be in the Main Gallery at VISUAL Centre (Carlow) in June 2014. The exhibition – Materialisation: Mapping the  Making – will chart the collaborations and will include notebooks, photographs, video and statements that illustrate the process and the narrative of each collaboration".

The Projects – Artists and their Chosen Collaborators

1. WARPED DESTRUCTION with Trish Belford, Senior Research Fellow, University of Ulster and Co-Director Tactility Factory, Belfast, collaborating with: Dr Barbara Dass, Professor of Design, University of Ulster,  Belfast

2. NEST with Joe Hogan, Internationally renowned basketmaker based in Co Mayo, collaborating with: Suzie Sullivan, Fibre artist

3. La Pachamama Santa Maria with Inga Hamilton. Inga has drawn together a team of world-class craftspeople to guide her in the technical aspects of the individual ceramic and elements of her overall vision. Installation Textile and Ceramic Artist, Bangor Co Down.

4. The Tullow Tailors and the Coat of Feathers with Helen Robbins, Carlow based artist. Co-director of ‘Art Alongside’ artists in schools project from 2000-2012 in partnership with IMMA National Programme, collaborating with Tom and Michael Johnston of Tullow and Julie Gill-Frisby, nationally renowned gentleman’s tailors

5. HEIRLOOM with Tara Ní Nualláin, artist and lecturer, founding member of Filament Fibre Artists

Dublin, collaborating with: Colin Power, perspex and laser engrave. 

A series of talks by artists and their collaborators will be programmed across the Summer period, including a number of workshops and practical lectures as part of an accompanying programme.

Outreach

The Carlow Arts Festival’s plans for Dublin Street also include a number of initiatives taking textiles and fabric-work as their starting point, including ongoing workshops for families in street decoration, knitting, weaving, banner-making etc.

Spotlight! Making Tomorrow

Our first Spotlight! feature is on Making Tomorrow, an upcoming 3 day festival of Textiles. Cork is definitely the place to be on the weekend of 7th-9th of March, with exhibitions, symposiums, talks and workshops taking place in a variety of venues throughout the city.

Making Tomorrow, the annual Cork Texiles Network conference, has gone from strength to strength, and is now a well respected event in the International textile circuit. A morning of talks from world renounced Textile Artists, is followed with a choice of workshops from Sketching and Screen-printing with Rachel Howard, Extreme Stitching with Cas Holmes, to Basketmaking with Katleen McCormick to Craft based Social Media with Orla Breslin. As well as this fantastic line-up of talks and workshops, CIT Crawford College of Art and Design will host "Make", a symposium and exhibition opening on Friday 7th March, looking at our relationship to objects, to making; our awareness through touch of our world of matter. On Friday, 7th March, at 6pm, the official opening of Things/Daiktai by Prof. Lesley Millar, MBE, International Curator, Author, Educator. This exhibition of contemporary textile artworks was made through an exchange project between 35 textiles students from CIT Crawford College of Art and Design and Kaunas Art Institute of Vilnius Academy of the Arts, Lithuania at CIT Wandesford Quay Gallery. This exhibition runs 8th March - 12th April, 2014. A number of talks and workshops will take place throughout the run of the exhibition.

After Saturdays conference, head over to the CIT Crawford College of Art & Design, where another opening takes place. Fabric Friends, work by Rachael Howard and CIT Crawford College Textiles students will officially open at 6pm.


A jam packed weekend of events, that places the Cork Textile Network, and indeed Cork as the cutting edge of Textile Art in Ireland. a weekend not to be missed!

Textile Architecture, Design Week, Dublin

Textile Architecture -  5-18 November 2013

Print Block, Dublin’s textile print collective, presents site specific textile works for the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI), at No. 8 Merrion Square, Dublin 2. This exhibition aims to showcase the use of fabrics as central to the design process for use within interiors and architectural projects.

At the launch of this exhibition on the 5 November at 5.30pm, there will also be an evening of talks, entitled “Textile Architecture”.  The talks will explore the synergy between textiles and buildings.

Official opening and drink reception: 5 November at 7- 8.30. All welcome.

Call for Papers - Focus on Irish Textiles, Cork

 

Following the success of the 2011 event, FITE 2012 will take place in University College Cork on Saturday 24 November 2012

FITE (an Irish word meaning “woven”) aims to bring together all who have an interest in historical textiles and to showcase the high quality of research undertaken in this area. The conference is attended by  academics, historians, teachers, textile artists and craftspeople.

Proposals on any aspect of textiles worn or produced in Ireland up to 1700, and from all disciplines, are welcome in order to encourage as wide a discussion as possible. Subjects may include, but are not limited to:

- individual extant artefacts and garments,

- study of contemporary depictions: carvings, drawings, descriptions, etc,

- reproducing garments,

- textile manufacture in Ireland.

Presentations including reproductions are particularly encouraged.

Proposals for 15 minute papers/presentations should be sent to irishtextiles@gmail.com.

A proposal/abstract could include any or all of the following: the idea of your presentation; an outline of the content; the context of your research; the sources/methodology used; findings/conclusions drawn.

Please aim for 100-150 words.

Registration will open on Saturday 1 September 2012

The closing date for proposals is Monday, 1 October 2012.

A Two Day Festival of Textiles from Britain and Ireland’s Leading Contemporary Textile Artists

The CTN Annual Textile Conference has grown in strength, and prestige since it began, and the number of attendees rises each year. This year, to cater for the numbers and also for anyone who may not be practice textiles, but has an interest in art, history or archaeology of textiles, half day and day tickets are now available.

On Saturday there will be talks by renowned textile artists including Matthew Harris, Elizabeth Brimelow, Amanda Gizzi. Speakers also include Eileen France on the ‘Cork Museum Lace Collection’, and Emer Fahy, ‘A History of Irish Quilts'.

“The Honan Chapel, in UCC, and its liturgical collection are products of the Irish Arts & Crafts Movement (1894-1925). The designers were searching for a new sense of Irish national identity on the threshold of political independence from Britain. This was expressed by looking back to the traditions of Celtic art and Hiberno-Romanesque architecture and blending them with contemporary tastes for Art Nouveau.” 

Textile Archaeologist, Libby Heckett, will give a talk on the Honan Textiles, while former director of the Hunt Museum, and current director of Cultural Projects at UCC, Virginia Teehan will give a talk on the Chapel  

On Sunday there will be workshops in Sketchbooks, Patchwork, Weaving, Needle-Felt

Machine Embroidery and Wire Forms

Workshops run Sunday 10.00am to 4.30pm with an hour for lunch
