Woollygathering - Yarn and Natural Fibre Supplier in Co. Clare

“My beliefs are in natural materials and all my stock is based on pure wool, linen, cotton, silks; natural and dyed to high Oeko standards, plant dyed or vinegar based. Some products are organic, too.”

Due to some logistical issues caused by the recent flight restrictions re-dress has pushed Fashion Evolution forward until the week of the 24th - 29th of May ; All events are still happening but at later dates! Fair Trade Fortnight - 22nd February to the 7th March 2010

‘MAKE IT HAPPEN – CHOOSE FAIRTRADE’

is the theme for this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight which will highlight the continued growth in Fairtrade sales and support in Ireland.

It's not just about chocolate, coffee or bananas, the textile industry is coming under scrutiny for the exploitation of its workers, and for the pollution caused in mass -production. Although the emphasis is usuallly on cotton, we hope people will take this opportunity to look at all kinds of fibre and textiles and wonder where it is coming from, who is making it and how it is produced.

Especially distressing is the continued use of child labour in the textile industry.  A few years ago, I read the the story Iqbal by Francesco D'adamo. A story based around the life of Iqbal Masih, a young Pakistani boy who was forced into bonded labour in a carpet factory at the age of five, who then escaped and became an international figurehead for the Bonded Labour Liberation Front at the age of 10. He was shot in the backat the age of 13.

A harrowing tale, but an exceptional boy who deserves to be remembered. So, for this Fairtrade Fortnight, think about the children, their future and their right to grow into adults, into a better  world.

Leaf Living; organic fabrics

For anyone dismayed at the severe lack of organic and fairtrade materials available in Ireland, you'll be glad to hear that Leaf Living now stocks about 20 different organic and fair trade cotton fabrics. They also sell fabric for interiors and upholstery by the meter. They are currently updating their website to include all the fabrics they hold in stock. If you can't wait, just give them a call.

They also sell Fashion Kits. A Fashion Kit includes all the materials you need to make the particular item, for example a dress or blouse; sizes are pre-traced and range from size 10 to size 16, come with a bobbin of matching thread and full instructions on how to make your chosen garment. For those wanting to have a go at dress-making, this is a good practice kit!

The Nude Ewe Project, UK

An interesting project being run in Bedfordshire at the moment is the Grazebeds scheme.

"Grazing produces a habitat which allows many different plants to grow side by side, and therefore wildlife diversity is usually at its peak in open spaces that are regularly grazed. In the absence of grazing our open spaces will lose their rich diversity of plants and animals. Small fragile flowers and grasses will disappear as a number of aggressive and competitive woody plants are given the opportunity to out-compete them for water and sunlight. The main objective of conservation grazing is to maintain the balance between these woody and shrubby plants and the species-rich grassland."

As well as preserving the land, they are using heritage varieties of sheep for grazing, so the project is working to conserve both the land and the native breeds of sheep. "Heritage breeds of sheep tend to be small and slow growing. Many produce excellent meat and fleece but because they grow slowly, they are not used commercially. Many of these breeds are now disappearing and some are close to extinction".

As part of this scheme, they have set up a project called The Nude Ewe project. Fleece and wool from these sheep are now for sale, and the proceeds go back to Wildlife Trust's grazing programme, and to the flock owners.

The Wool Initiative

The Wool Initiative was established in 2001 by a group of Rare Sheep Breeders in Northern Ireland. Their aims are to exploit the unique qualities of the fleeces produced by the diverse breeds of sheep listed as endangered by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.

They stock the following:

Fleeces are supplied as washed or unwashed, in packs of 50gm. 100gm. or by kilo. A variety from most Rare and Traditional sheep breeds, of natural colours and the wide range of wool characteristics (staple length, fineness, lustre, crimp etc.) for use by spinners, felters, weavers and many other craftspeople.

Yarns are available from the following breeds - Whitefaced Woodland. Dorset Down, Southdown, Portland, Kerry Hill, Shetland (White), Shetland ( grey), Shetland (dark moorit), Shetland (fawn), Jacob, Oxford Down, Shropshire, Galway, Teeswater, Wensleydale, Leicester Longwool.

More on International Year of Natural Fibres

It's disappointing that there is not one official event in Ireland to celebrate UN International Year of Natural Fibres. (Here's a previous blog post about IYNF).

So, maybe we should have lots of little unofficial events. Earlier this year the Dublin Knit Collective organised a little swop, The Dublin DishCloth and Fairtrade Swop, to raise ecological and ethical awareness of products and goods in Ireland. They organised it through Ravelry. It was there first time organising a swop, and it was a great idea.

So, maybe we all could do something. If you are part of a knitting/spinning/patchwork group, why not have a Fairtrade/Natural Fibre Day. If you are an individual, go into your local yarn or fabric shop and ask about Fairtrade/Natural Fibre products. The more people that ask, the more freely available it will become.
