DERRYAUN CRAFTS WORKSHOP CALENDAR 2011, MAYO

Sunday 20th March. 3D Needle Felting Workshop  

Learn how to use a felting needle to sculpt wool, create wonderful little fairy folk, animals or flowers. This is one of my favourite crafts, it offers endless possibilities for either 3D or flat decorative pieces, it takes up little space and there is no mess with soap and water. This craft involves using a very sharp needle and is not suitable for children under 12 years. No experience is needed. Cost. €75.00



Sunday 3rd April. Stitch, Bead, Embellish! 

Learn how to create small 3D objects….a focal bead, a hair ornament, a pendant or what ever takes your fancy. These little free-form creations require several techniques - beading, simple embroidery stitches and wirework.  As well as learning structural techniques you will also develop and strengthen your ability to combine colour and texture to please the eye. The ability to use a fine needle and thread is essential for this workshop.  Cost €75.00 



Sunday 12th June. Make stunning lanterns with Tom Meskell. This year’s theme is ‘Birds’ More workshop information to follow. 

Tom Meskell has developed a reputation for working in many media, mainly in his ability to work with groups and as a coordinator of people in creating  art work. His most successful projects have been sculptural lantern projects and environmental sculpture projects, tom is also a highly respected arts in health practitioner. Tom’s work has appeared in the Kilkenny arts festival, Roula Boula Festival, Public art award with Mayo Co Co, Cosan Glas environmental sculpture trail, New ground environmental sculpture project, Raumers residency Finland,  to name but a few. Cost €85.00 Class limited to six students. Closing date for bookings 22nd May.

 
Thurs and Fri 1st & 2nd Sept. Basket Weaving With Joe Hogan, Renowned Master Craftsman.  

This workshop is aimed at both beginners and basket weavers wishing to explore a different shape i.e. a shopper or small turf basket. The aim of the course is to give as thorough an introduction as possible to making a basket, from making the base to finishing the border, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. There will also be information about growing a small willow bed. Venue: Derryaun Crafts. Cost €160.00. (covers two days) Class limited to six students. Closing date for bookings – 11th August.

Joe Hogan has been making baskets at Loch na Fooey since 1978 and in that time has earned a reputation for making strong, durable baskets of the highest quality. The colours in these award winning baskets are those of the natural willows which are grown at Loch na Fooey. www.Joehoganbaskets.com


2th & 13th Nov. Woven Wild  Animals and Found Object sculpture with Tom Meskell. Two day environmental sculpture course.  

This is a two day  exploration of the use of natural materials and their potential in creating sculptures and found object sculpture in the beautiful setting of Derryaun, Drummin.  In this time we will have an overview of environmental art and will through walks identify and collect material that is suitable for making sculpture. Cost €160.00 (covers two days)
 The aim of the two days are ;
·         To enable artists and non artists to identify natural materials which are suitable to build sculptures with.
·         To become aware of the potential of working with natural materials in a sculptural sense.
·         To learn some basic techniques that are useful in working with natural materials.
What people need to bring; Craft knife/stanly knife. Walking shoes and a rain jacket, a camera and a pruning tool. Your favourite found objects –shells, stones, sea washed glass, bog wood, drift wood, feathers, rusty metal etc.


Further Information:
All courses run from 10am to 4.30pm.
The cost of each course includes materials & light refreshments, please bring a packed lunch, and a note book will be useful. A 50% deposit is required with bookings. Deposits are non-refundable but your booking can be transferred with 7 days notice. Please pay online, credit card or send a P.O. or a cheque made payable  to Derryaun Crafts with your booking.
