National Day of Volunteering
30th September 2011
Volunteer Ireland are organising a Knit-A-Thon, a nation-wide event where hundreds,
maybe even thousands, of people will be knitting for charities together as part
of the National Day of Volunteering.
Anyone who is interested can participate! You can get
involved as a knitter by knitting an item for one of the charities we’re
partnering with; as a teacher of knitting to someone who is interested in
learning the craft; as a learner of the craft; or as a supporter: helping
others to get involved or take part.
"We have been in contact with knitting groups across the
country, and several of them have expressed interest in participating in the
knit-a-thon. We will be asking them to host events locally. Members of the
public will be able to find a list of registered “knitting sites” online, or
you can contact your local volunteer centre and they will direct you to a
knitting site. Then all you need to do is either show up and knit, or show up
and ask someone to teach you how to knit. Either way, just get involved!
We have been in contact with many charities and
organisations that are interested in accepting knitted items (see below). VI
will not be accepting donations; rather we’ll be asking you to donate your
knitted items directly to the charities. We have provided a list of the types
of knitted items that these charities would like to receive. The items knitted
will be used to help those in need in Ireland and around the world!"
There are a number of events already planned around the
country in Carlow, Cavan, Cork, Dublin, Galway, Kerry, Kilkenny, Limerick, Mayo,
Meath, Tipperary, Waterford, Westmeath, Wexford, Wicklow! You can see the venues
and contact details on the Volunteer Ireland website or here
