The Spinner of Inishere, a play by Mairead Sharry, Galway

The Spinner of Inishere

a new play by Mairéad Sharry

performed by The Strolling Players

Thursday 29th March, 8.30pm, Townhall Theatre, Galway

I don't think we have ever promoted a play on The Woolly Way blog before. But it has such strong textile connections, how could we not! The play is about the traditional life of a widow, who spins, weaves and knits Aran sweaters on the Aran Islands. Here is the rest of the story...

"Three actors are reluctant to commit to a new play. The actress, a star of romantic comedies, has been promised the greatest love story ever told. The actor who is a veteran of physical gritty roles is promised the vilest murder ever and the bodhran player from Australia can't believe his luck when one of the characters just happens to be a bodhran player from Australia! Is the spinner of Inishere spinning yarn or spinning a yarn?"

The play is written by our very own Mairead Sharry, a spinner and weaver from the Aran Islands. Mairead is no stranger to the pen, having already published a book 'Yarns, Short Stories' . Last year, she also published a children's books, 'Ronan'. This book is a whimsical look at the traditional life and customs of the Aran Islands and in particular the island of Inishere through the eyes of a little boy called Ronan. Mairead also illustrated the book, using textile collages and the result is beautiful! Both books are available to buy from Kennys Bookshop, Galway
