The book records and celebrates the achievement of Cleo, in
commissioning and promoting handknitting and handweaving through an era when
few in Ireland appreciated its value. Knitting and weaving have long had a
powerful emblematic status in the world-wide image of Irish craft and
culture.
The author Hilary O'Kelly graduated from the History
of Dress course at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. Her research,
focusing in particular on dress and the everyday, has embraced themes of
cultural politics, identity, religion and emigration. She lectures in the
faculty of Visual Culture at the National College of Art & Design in
Dublin.
The book is available to buy on the evening of the launch
