Yarnbombing - Born To Knit, Kilkenny

In April 2012 Kilkenny County Council Arts Office in partnership with the Community and Culture Dept. of Kilkenny County embarked on a very exciting project which will culminate in the Yarn Bombing of key sites, buildings monuments and gathering places in the main areas of Kilkenny City.

Yarn bombing,, yarn storming, guerrilla knitting, urban knitting or graffiti knitting is a type of graffiti or street art that employs colorful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fiber . While yarn installations – called yarn bombs or yarn storms – may last for years, they are considered non-permanent, and, unlike other forms of graffiti, can be easily removed if necessary.

While other forms of graffiti may be expressive, decorative, territorial, socio-political commentary, advertising or vandalism, yarn bombing was initially almost exclusively about reclaiming and personalizing sterile or cold public places.

The Arts Office, Community and Culture Dept., our designer and local champions, will host and support knitting sessions where people work together to create, socialise, have fun and work towards final products.
This project promotes community participation and social wellbeing; it also endeavours to create a collective sense whereby people are active parts of the social fabric of society through the creation of opportunities that connect communities, offer a sense of solidarity across the generations and across the county- all the while having different meanings and significance for each participant.
